Described by his coach as “The best player in Nebraska in the past 40 years,” he was voted by the Lincoln Journal-Star as “The most outstanding prep basketball player” in the past 30 years. A prolific scorer with a single season scoring average of 28+ pts. per game, the name Reckewey has become synonymous with East High mens basketball. He earned All-City and All-Conference honors in both football and basketball, as well as First Team AllState and All-America in basketball in the 1970 and 1971 seasons. Leading his team to the 1971 Class “A” State Basketball Championship, he set tournament records for field goals in a single game (16), free throws (23) and most tournament points (118). An outstanding student leader in academics and athletics.
