John was one of the finest wrestlers to compete for East High. He was a three year member of the wrestling team and competed at a different weight each year. As a sophomore he wrestled at 98 pounds, his junior year at 103 and his senior year at 115. Each year John finished in the top four at state, finishing fourth asa sophomore and second both his junior and senior season.

As a senior, John's second place finish helped the Spartans claim their first ever State Championship for the school. Because of his overall success during the three year time span, John was selected as an All-American wrestler.
