An aggressive multi-talented athlete who possessed great physical strength. He used his strength and aggressiveness on both sides of the ball as a tackle on the Spartan football team. His steady play on the gridiron helped East capture the 1979 Class A state championship and earned him All-City honors.

As a discus thrower, he was unmatched in his outstanding performances. His performance at the 1980 state meet led to his capturing the Class A state championship. His throw of 184 feet 4 inches also won him the All-Class Gold Medal and High School All-America honors as one of the top ten throws in the nation during 1980. John’s performance at the 1980 state meet helped the Spartans earn the Class A Runner-Up finish.
